Pastor & church History

Our Beginnings

Our founder Robert Colwell grew up in New York as an orphan moving in and out of different foster homes.  As an adult he was deeply moved when he witnessed a 10 year old boy boldly proclaiming before his elementary school classmates that he had been called by God to be a minister. Robert was immediately convicted because at age 13 he too had received the same call but continued to live for himself.

After surrendering his life to the Lord, Robert began an outreach to troubled teens called Love and Order Christian Academy.  As more people got involved it developed into a church and was renamed Love and Order Christian Fellowship.  In October 1998 Escrow closed on our new property and we moved to our present location of 4528 Crenshaw Blvd.

After years of being an independent non-denominational church, Robert's desire for fellowship with other Word-focused churches led him to seek affiliation with Calvary Chapel.  He entered the affiliation process and began attending a weekly pastor's meeting.  Official induction into the Calvary organization came in December 2010.

Robert earned a Masters degree in theology from Fuller Theological Seminary in 2004.  He and his wife Angela have been married for 40 years and have 4 children.

Calvary Chapel Crenshaw is located in the Crenshaw District of Los Angeles, California. The name "Crenshaw" is also derived from Crenshaw Boulevard, one of the district's principle thoroughfares.
